The Vidigal favela, in the south of Rio, is suffering an acute hepatitis A outbreak, in which 3 out of 10 water samples collected in the Vidigal community were positive for HAV. Please check the Water-related Disease News in January 2018.

Cholera, diarrhea & dysentery update (08): Asia (Yemen)

The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen has released additional figures for the ongoing outbreak of cholera. Since the last update on [Sun 26 Feb 2017], 1598 new suspected cases of cholera and 0 deaths have been reported. The trend of suspected cholera cases per week appears to be on the decline in most districts or governorates. Nearly 85 per cent of the new cases recorded since the last update were in 10 districts within Al Hudaydah, Al Bayda, Hajjah, Sana’a and Ta’izz governorates.

Between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and 5 of 2017 [1 Jan-3 Feb 2017], a total of 1897 cholera cases were reported in Haiti, including 28 deaths. In the Dominican Republic, from the beginning of the year to EW 2 of 2017 [1-13 Jan 2017], there were 7 suspected cholera cases and 2 confirmed cases reported, including 1 death.

A total of 420 deaths due to cholera were reported in Haiti in 2016, an increase of 41 percent compared to 2015. According to data released on 29 Dec 2016 by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the disease also affected 39 000 persons [in Haiti] in 2016.

Rotavirus outbreak due to contaminated water

Investigations confirmed that the recent rotavirus outbreak was due to the contaminated water at the Bukit Merah Laketown Resort water park. The Perak Health director Datuk Dr Juita Ghazalie said investigations and laboratory results concluded that the water park was the source of the outbreak and the possible exposure date was 24 Sep 2016.

Cryptosporidiosis – USA (04): (AZ)

More than 100 people in the Phoenix area [Maricopa County, Arizona] have been sickened in an outbreak of the diarrhea-causing parasite _Cryptosporidium parvum_, and Maricopa County officials have identified more than 20 recreational water facilities — including splash pads, water parks, and public pools — that may have been contaminated.
